Whitewater Valley Marine Corps League Auxiliary January 2010 Newsletter Next monthly meeting: Sunday, January 17th at 5:30 pm 2009 was another busy year for the Auxiliary! As usual, the Whitewater Valley Auxiliary Unit members and their families and friends have donated an enormous amount of time, effort, talent, ideas, tools, materials, enthusiasm, vehicles, trailers, energy, miles, money, and so much more for our success! The following is a brief recap of some of our activities in 2009: SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS This year, the Auxiliary sent hundreds of care packages overseas. We had a many fundraising programs for our care packages. We sold yellow Warm Glow Candles. We sold message cards, enclosing the yellow cards in the care packages in May and enclosing the Christmas cards in the packages in November. The Auxiliary partnered with Ultimate Fighting of Indiana (UFI) in a mixed martial arts event at the National Guard Armory. We participated in the Elder Beerman Community Day coupon sale fundraiser, and included raffle tickets for American flags which we gave away each week. Auxiliary members traveled to Camp LeJeune, North Carolina to wish farewell to the Marines of the Second Maintenance Battalion being deployed to Iraq. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT The Auxiliary assisted with the Alzheimers Memory Ride and the monthly benefit rides with the Whitewater Valley Motorcycle Club. We volunteered with KICKS 96 and the WWV Motorcycle Club at the Dutch Country Flea Market in Greens Fork for the Thunder of Love event to benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. We sponsored a booth at the annual Fourth Street Fair. We attended the KICKS 96 annual Cash for Kids event at Fricker's. We participated in the annual Toys for Tots Off-Road Benefit Ride at Haspin Acres in Laurel and sold Warm Glow Candles as a fundraiser. We assembled and delivered 300 Christmas care packages for patients at Richmond State Hospital. We entered a float in the Richmond Christmas Parade and the Centerville Lighted Christmas Parade. On behalf of the Auxiliary, we would like to extend a special thank you to Jim Clark, Terry France, Rick Johnson, Dave Parker, Charlie Rose, and Troy See for their efforts on the Christmas parade float! AUXILIARY BUSINESS We attended the Marine Corps League Auxiliary Department of Indiana Conference in Terre Haute in March and several Whitewater Valley Unit members were elected to state offices. The award for the Unit with the most increase in membership was earned by Whitewater Valley and two of our Unit members tied for Indiana Recruiter of the Year. The Whitewater Valley Detachment hosted the Department of Indiana Fall Conference in October and our Auxiliary Unit received the second place certificate for Child Welfare which was awarded at the National Convention. We met the president of the newly formed Auxiliary Unit at the Howlin Mad Detachment in Hobart and we're planning to attend their charter installation meeting on January 24th.
